Stearman Foundation seeks donated parts for display airplane

GALESBURG, IL - The National Stearman Fly-In and tits parent organization, the National Stearman Foundation, want you. Well, not exactly you, but rather your donations of Stearman parts that can be used to assemble a non-flying Stearman for a permanent display in Galesburg.

The first donation, a Stearman fuselage courtesy of the Louisiana Boys, has arrived and is being stored in a hangar at the Galesburg Municipal Airport.

Dan Haas of Galesburg will coordinate the project. Haas is a member of the National Stearman Fly-In's Board of Directors and an experienced aircraft restorer. His Navy N2S restoration won top awards at the Galesburg fly-in and in the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Airventure competition at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

As parts are collected and the assembly process get under way, the project will be documented with pictures and reports posted on this fly-in's Web site. The site address is: www.stearmanflyin.com.

Following is a list of parts which Haas says are needed for the project:

1 - Engine (Continental R 670 or Lycoming R 680)
1 - Set of Wings:  2 - Upper (Left and Right);  2 - Lower (Left and Right);  2 - Ailerons (Left and Right); 1 - Upper Center Section

Parts donations and financial contributions to this project, which is being conducted under the auspices of The National Stearman Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, may be tax deductible. Contributors should consult a tax adviser before finalizing donations.

The Foundation exists to provide a permanent source of funding for the National Stearman Fly-In in Galesburg; to promote the desire to fly, own and preserve Stearman aircraft; to provide a permanent facility for the education and awareness of Stearman owners, pilots, restorers and mechanics; to provide research materials relating to safety, restoration, maintenance, history and flying of Stearman aircraft; and to provide a permanent display of Stearman aircraft and related artifacts available to the public.
