NATIONAL STEARMAN FLY-IN 2006 AWARD WINNERS

GALESBURG, Ill. - Here are the award winners from the 35th National Stearman Fly In held Sept. 4-10, 2006 at the Galesburg Municipal Airport:

Early Bird:
(first pilot-in-command to arrive at Galesburg Municipal Airport for the 2006 Fly In who remained for the duration): Michael Porter arrived Thursday, Aug. 31, in Stearman N59293.

Longest Cross-Country:
(awarded to the pilot whose direct route from his or her home airport to Galesburg was the longest in a Stearman): N9923H, Edward Miller, Santa Rosa, CA, 1900 miles.

Youngest Pilot:
(awarded to the youngest pilot who, acting as pilot-in-command, landed a Stearman upon its arrival for the 2006 Fly In): N463HS, Ryan Elliott, 17 years old.

Most Vintage Pilot:
(awarded to the oldest person who, acting as pilot-in-command, landed a Stearman upon its arrival for the 2006 Fly In): N5145N, Ben Robertson, 77 years old.

Rescue Drop:
(for the flour bomb dropped closest to the center of the target): First: N57989, George Pascal, pilot and bombardier, 14 ft., 11 ins.; Second: N59472, Wally Falardeau, pilot, Bob Jesko, bombardier, 15 ft., 3 ins.; Third: N1370V, Jim Ratliff, pilot, John Ratliff, bombardier, 16 ft. 9 ins.

Short-Field Takeoff/Stock Engines:
(shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: N64587, Fred Wright, 330 feet; Second: N33NA, Roger Brown, 380 feet; Third: Tie: N61467, Mark Roethlisberger, and N4610V, Karl Vacek, 425 feet.

Short-Field Takeoff (275- to 300-horsepower engines):
(shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: N532WW, Wayne Witt, 380 feet; Second: N661MP, Michele Pashkevich, 490 feet.

Short-Field Takeoff (450-horsepower engines):
(shortest distance from start of take-off roll until airborne): First: N349DC, Claude Sonday, 295 feet; Second: N347KF, Paul Friies, 325 feet; Third: N7711J, Rick Stratton, 360 feet.

Accuracy Landing Contest:
(for landing closest to a designated line): First: N61467, Mark Roethlisberger, 25 feet; Second: N54284, Chris Cochran, 100 feet; Third: N59293, Andy Porter, 120 feet.

Aerobatics Competition:
First: N4760V, Jay Pemberton, and N7711J, Erik Edgren; Second: N59635, Andy Schechter; Third: N59334, Daniel Perschau.

Best Custom:
(in recognition of creativity and workmanship on custom Stearmans): N300E, Mike Connell.

Best Military Custom:
(in recognition of creativity and workmanship on military custom Stearmans): N64890, Bill Morgan

Deed Levy Award:
(for Stearmans documented to have been flown by pilots of historic significance, the beginning or ending serial number of a model series, rare color markings, or unusual equipment installed by Stearman or during military service): Not presented this year.

Silver Legacy Award:
(for Stearmans restored to replicate or preserve the historic accuracy as used in pre/post-war civilian aviation): NC785H, Model 4E, Alan Lopez.
